Fleur Bookcover

2017

I made a bookcover for the short story Fleur by Louise Erdrich. I created my primary imagery with real meat and frozen earth to allow my cover to be exactly what I intended. I sought to deliver the intensity of the story to the viewer, as well as to instigate shock. The additions of a fleuron and the history of the typeface elevated the semiotic communication. I wanted to push beyond mere decoration, and this goal is aided by the back cover work, based off of a standard deck of cards. I created the fleuron from it as well. This project followed my quest for subtle feminist ideals woven into a greater work.
